Ray Bakke, a baptist pastor and author of a couple of books and several articles on urban ministry, writes of one experience he had when introducing himself to a neighborhood pastor:

A Presbyterian minister said, "You're a Baptist? You want me to tell you what a Baptist is? He grabs people on street corners and asks them whether they're going to hell." At this point the minister grabbed me and shook me! "Then the fellow says, 'No,' so the Baptist tells him, 'Well then, go to hell!'"

Well, that Presbyterian pastor was grabbing the wrong guy!! Unfortunately, however, his little description is right on target for too many American evangelicals who reduce all encounters with unbelievers to decision oriented interaction, thus revealing their semi-gnostic understanding and practice of the Christian faith.
